He was a jurist, abolitionist, a great scholar and the political leader of a group called "the liberals" whose agenda was to establish a French republic. He asked a question that stuck a cord with one of his young guests. He asked them if it would be nice if the French people give America a big monument as a great memorial to independence. He thought it would be profound to give America a gift that would convey how passionate they were about liberty as well. One of the guests in that event was the famous sculptor, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi.
